Why is Routes into Rail important?

The rail industry is facing pressing skills shortages.

  • The demand for talent has increased, caused by significant government investment in rail projects.
  • The current supply of talent has decreased – caused by an ageing workforce and the number of apprentices being trained not keeping up with demand.
  • Nearly 50,000 rail industry employees are expected to retire by 2030.

This means attracting new people – of all ages – into the sector is vital. Routes into Rail aims to inspire new talent by providing information and advice on rail careers, opportunities, skill requirements and real-life examples of what it’s like to work in rail.
