NSAR works with education, training and specialist providers and industry leading companies to ensure there is an affective supply chain to deliver new skilled people or up-skill existing people for the industry.
‘Britain Runs on Rail’ is the slogan to promote the industry. The rail sector amounts to just under 1% UK GDP (c£14bn turnover) but the contribution of rail to the UK economy is many times greater. The UK could not function without its rail system.
So rail is vital to UK prosperity. And to make the rail system operate safely and effectively, the industry needs talented and skilled people. And the rail industry needs an effective education and skills supply chain to attract, educate, train and develop those people.
Through our skills intelligence unit, we advise on demand for training; demand for some specialist skills is small and we want to avoid unnecessary capacity being created. NSAR advises where investment in capacity is necessary.
We advise providers how resources can be shared so we maximise the use of the existing rail training capacity. We want to ensure there is reasonable geographical access to training and education. We identify partners to deliver either parts of or the whole rail apprenticeship standards.
We call this the National Network – a virtual network – showing a map of provision on who delivers a programme or part of a programme. The National Network creates a proper supply chain to deliver education and training for the UK rail industry. This network operates as a map and an online database available on the NSAR website, and is quality assured by NSAR on behalf of the industry.
The National Network represents a UK education and training supply chain consisting of selected FE Colleges located around the UK, selected universities, Network Rail Workforce Development Centres, quality assured training providers, specialist academies and partner companies.
Members of the National Network have access to NSAR-CONNECT, NSAR’s vacancy matching service, access to NSAR’s skills intelligence and notice, where it can be provided, of opportunities, in the UK rail industry.
NSAR-CONNECT will be to the benefit of individuals looking to enter the rail market, and employers looking for talent in the industry. This online system will retain and deploy talented individuals who have met a high-level of industry-recognised assessment in over-subscribed apprenticeship and graduate programmes to employers looking for recruits.
We want partners in the National Network and NSAR-CONNECT to actively promote the wide range of opportunities available in rail, provide the best education and training, whilst ensuring that training is always rail focussed and be the place where industry firms will seek new staff.
